Fractionated coconut oil: neutral, light, unscented. It
absorbs well, doesn't stick and leaves no greasy film. I
deliberately don't use almond oil, out of caution for people
with nut allergies.
I always bring two bottles: the neutral base, and the same
base scented with arolla pine essential oil. The arolla (or
Swiss stone pine) grows above 1,800 metres in the Valais Alps,
and its wood gives mountain chalets their scent of warm wood.
It has long been credited with a calming effect: an Austrian
study
(Joanneum Research, PDF in German) observed lower heart rates
and better recovery in rooms and beds made of stone pine wood.
And above all, a scent that carries the mountain into the
evening.
Neutral or arolla: I ask you at the start of the session.
If you have an allergy or are pregnant, just tell me, that
is what the neutral base is for.
